Udayamperoor Synod Church
The Udayamperoor Old Church (St. Gervasis and Protasis Church / Marthariam Church) holds a highly significant place in the history of Christianity in Kerala. It was here that the Synod of Diamper (Udayamperoor Synod) took place—an ecclesiastical assembly convened from June 20 to 26, 1599, by Western Roman Catholic representatives based in Goa with the aim of bringing the Nasrani Christians of Kerala into the Catholic Church.
History: Tradition holds that it was established in 510 AD. Church historian Bernard Thomas records that it was built during the reign of the Villarvattom King. Later, in the ninth century, the Persian bishops Sabor and Afroth rebuilt the church.
